Letter: That winning attitude
Heroes all: the people and horses who mean so much
Published: 13/10/2006 (Letters) Joan Cairncross

I WOULD like to nominate Sergeant Cecil for his wonderful consistency and attitude to racing and winning.

It has been a delight to watch his progress from major handicapper last year to running in Group races with such success this year.

The race in France really got the British excited at the start of the afternoon and, having looked to have a lot to do, he eventually won with consummate ease, looking a very happy horse.

Sergeant Cecil is a great credit to Rod Millman, Alan Munro and the team who look after him, keeping him fit, well and happy.

Frankie Dettori has also ridden him to perfection on recent occasions, reporting that he has spoken to Alan for advice as to the best way to ride the Sergeant. A nice gesture and a sensible move.

It is always lovely to have a star whom every racegoer admires. Let's hope he continues his success and wins next year's Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

He is a great vindication that the long distance races, which at one time were in jeopardy, have been retained.

Letter: CHATROOM: Munros a champion

Class usually shines through and Alan Munro has it in abundance. What he did last year on Sergeant Cecil was amazing and now he wins a Classic. With more opportunities, what a bet he would be for champion jockey.

CHATROOM: Munro starred on Araafa

Great ride by Alan Munro on Araafa - he is one of the best judges of pace. Met Alan at Newbury in September for the first time and what a nice fella. All the best mate.

Letter: Don't forget Munro

SO FRANKIE won the Derby. Well done!

Actually, Authorized won the Derby - Frankie was merely the very fortunate passenger.

Let us not forget the jockey who would probably have ridden him had he not suffered cruel misfortune last year, resulting in his licence being withdrawn due to ill-health.

When Generous won the Derby in identical fashion, in identical colours, except for the gold stars on his sleeves, the jockey was Alan Munro.

Alan moved to Hong Kong before eventually returning to re-establish his career in Britain, aided in no small measure by Sergeant Cecil, another ride from which Frankie has benefited due to Alan's illness, and Araafa, who raced in the same colours as Authorized.

Alan, you are not forgotten. Best wishes for a full recovery and a return to action as soon as possible.

John Best Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Notts

Great to read that Sergeant Cecil is working well for the King George. With the race cutting up as it is, there is at least one contender in there for whom victory would set the racing world alight.

Cecil stakes his claim: - LeeAnn owes him a packet of polos before he will pose for photos.
